What Is Celiac Disease?

Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition where eating gluten triggers your immune system to attack the lining of your small intestine. Over time, this damages the villi — tiny finger-like projections that absorb nutrients.

Symptoms

  • Digestive: bloating, diarrhea, constipation, nausea
  • Non-digestive: fatigue, joint pain, headaches, brain fog
  • Serious: anemia, osteoporosis, infertility, nerve damage, increased cancer risk

  • Getting Tested

  • Blood test — tTG-IgA antibodies (must be eating gluten for accurate results)
  • Biopsy — endoscopy to examine small intestine
  • Genetic test — HLA-DQ2/DQ8 (rules out celiac if negative)

  • What Is Gluten Sensitivity?

Non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) causes similar symptoms to celiac but without the autoimmune response or intestinal damage.

    Symptoms

  • Bloating and gas
  • Fatigue and brain fog
  • Headaches
  • Joint pain
  • Skin rashes

  • Diagnosis

There's no definitive test. It's diagnosed by:

  • Ruling out celiac disease
  • Ruling out wheat allergy
  • Observing symptom improvement on a GF diet

    What Both Have in Common

Regardless of which condition you have, the treatment is the same: avoid gluten.

    The difference is strictness:

  • Celiac — : Must avoid ALL gluten, including trace amounts and cross-contamination
  • Sensitivity — : May tolerate tiny amounts, but most people feel best avoiding it entirely

  • Managing Your Gluten-Free Life
