Tequila is naturally gluten-free if it is made from 100% blue agave. But cheap "mixto" tequilas often contain hidden gluten. Here is how to order safely at the bar.

When a celiac walks into a bar, tequila is often considered the safest alcohol choice. And generally, that is true.

Because traditional tequila is distilled from the blue agave plant, it is naturally 100% gluten-free. There is no wheat, barley, or rye involved in the process.

However, the tequila industry has a massive loophole that catches many newly diagnosed celiacs off guard: Mixto Tequila. Here is the definitive guide to drinking tequila safely.

The Safe Zone: 100% Blue Agave ✅

The golden rule for celiacs drinking tequila is simple: You must only drink tequila that explicitly says "100% Blue Agave" (or "100% de Agave") on the label.

If the bottle says this, it means the alcohol was distilled purely from the agave plant.

* Safe Brands: Patrón, Don Julio, Casamigos, Espolòn, Herradura.

* These premium and mid-tier brands are completely safe for someone with celiac disease.

The Danger Zone: Mixto Tequila ❌

If you buy a cheap bottle of tequila (or order the cheapest margarita at a dive bar), you are likely drinking a "Mixto" tequila.

* What is a Mixto? By Mexican law, a liquor only needs to be 51% agave to be legally called "tequila." The remaining 49% can be fermented from other, cheaper sugar sources.

* The Risk: While that remaining 49% is usually cane sugar, some cheap manufacturers use grain-based alcohols (which could be derived from wheat) or add caramel coloring and flavorings that are not gluten-free.

* Famous Mixtos: Jose Cuervo Especial (Gold and Silver) are mixtos. They do not say "100% Agave" on the label. While Jose Cuervo claims their products are gluten-free, many highly sensitive celiacs report reactions to mixtos.

What About Reposado and Añejo?

Tequila comes in three main ages:

  • Blanco (Silver): Unaged, clear tequila. The safest and purest form.
  • Reposado: Aged in oak barrels for up to a year.
  • Añejo: Aged in oak barrels for 1 to 3 years.

  • *Is the aging process safe?* Yes. Some celiacs worry about the oak barrels (due to the "wheat paste" myth associated with wine), but the aging process for Reposado and Añejo is completely safe. Just ensure the bottle still says 100% Blue Agave.

    The Margarita Warning ⚠️

Pure tequila is safe, but margarita mixes are a massive trap.

If you order a margarita at a restaurant, it is rarely just tequila, fresh lime juice, and agave syrup (the traditional, safe recipe).

Most bars use cheap, pre-bottled sweet-and-sour mix. These commercial mixes are loaded with artificial flavorings, preservatives, and occasionally hidden gluten-containing carriers.

    How to order safely:

Always ask the bartender for a "Skinny Margarita" and specify: *"Just 100% agave tequila, fresh squeezed lime juice, and a splash of soda water. No pre-made mix, please."*

Summary: You can safely enjoy Taco Tuesday. Just banish cheap mixto tequilas from your life forever, look for the "100% Agave" label, and use the Check Gluten web app to scan any store-bought margarita mixes before you pour them.
